Issued in 3 parts between April 1835 and March 1838, in a sequence not corresponding to that on the "List of plates," which was issued with part 3

Plates preceded by title page, dedication leaf for Reverend Joseph Goodall, list of subscribers (3 unnumbered leaves in total); and Preface (pages [i]-ii), Introduction (pages [iii]-vii), "Synopsis specierum" ([i] page on 1 leaf) and the list of plates ([i] page on 1 leaf)
Each leaf of plates is accompanied by a leaf of descriptive letterpress and a blank guard-sheet; some of the text leaves are printed on both sides
The hand-colored lithographs include one printed on a folded leaf ("Trogon resplendens") and 35 full-page illustrations, signed: "Drawn from nature & on stone by J. and E. Gould; printed by C. Hullmandel."
A second edition, entirely rewritten and illustrated with new plates, was published between 1858 and 1875
Includes bibliographical references
